It is well known that steel silos are made of steel plates connected by mechanical welding, riveting or rolling. They are ordinary steel products, and just like any other steel products, they are vulnerable to atmospheric corrosion.
Atmospheric Corrosion
Whether indoor or outdoor, steel is affected by atmospheric corrosion. According to statistics, the annual loss of steel due to atmospheric corrosion is more than half of the total steel. The harm of atmospheric corrosion can be seen as a result.
In different parts of the earth, in different seasons and at different times, people always face different atmospheric environments. Steel silos are exposed to different atmospheric conditions and are subject to varying degrees of atmospheric corrosion. For example, compared to temperate regions, steel silos are more vulnerable to corrosion from atmosphere in rainy regions, hot and arid regions, cold and snowy regions, and areas with high humidity and salinity.
Furthermore, due to the rapid economic development of modern society, the atmospheric environment has been artificially damaged. At present, the composition of the atmosphere is also accompanied by many toxins, and the corrosion of steel structures is also serious. In particular, the strong acid and alkali gases directly make the steel structure buildings completely different.
Thus, to make steel silo strong enough to provide maximum service life and low operating costs in an aggressive atmosphere, the key factor is the protection against corrosion. We need to do a complete overall design and comprehensive review, and then take a number of technical measures in the key links of the material selection and construction process. Until we make sufficient preparation and strict implementation, the productivity and service life of the steel silo can be fully guaranteed.
Choose materials rationally in accordance with local atmospheric conditions
- General design based on local atmospheric conditions
When we design the structure and strength of the steel silo, we must work out the corrosion-resistant scheme according to the local atmospheric conditions. Surface protection and local fittings of fastening bolts, nuts, clamping plates and gutters on the lid must be carried out in accordance with the specifications, design standards and service life of the steel silo.
- Reasonable selection of materials
In order to prolong the service life of steel silos, we will use suitable galvanized sheets with a certain thickness of zinc coating as the main material of the steel silo. For galvanized zinc coating with a certain thickness, sandblasting is more suitable than surface etching prior to use.
Things need to notice during the silo constrction
Mechanical damage, such as scratches and bites on galvanized steel sheets, must be avoided during steel silo’s construction, assembly, transportation, loading and unloading, and installation process.
Some parts in the overall structure may be a lack of certain protection, such as welding zones and bolts and nuts. This could cause insufficient thickness of the galvanized layer from outside their assembly dimensions. These parts need regular maintenance to ensure their service lives.
After six months, the steel silos should be servicing to check whether there are rust stains on the top of the steel silos. If so, we can use rusted phosphating to treat the surface. The concrete method is to coat the epoxy primer with epoxy resin twice, and then dye the acrylic modified alkyd resin coating twice.
